Background:

Grand Rapids Islamic School is first full time Islamic school in Grand Rapids Michigan.

In 2011Muslim community realized the need for a full time Islamic school as essential for providing an environment for the new generation of Muslim in which they cam learn Islamic faith, culture and values without the fear of intimidation. A planning committee was established headed by Dr. Ghulam Malik to raise awareness for the need of a full time Islamic school, collect funds and find a suitable building for the school. The planning committee consisted of:

Mukhtar Ahmed MBA, Elaine Wahab MBA, Kader Karien, Kamal Nuriddin, Kausar Malik MSC. MBA and Professor N. Barakat PhD. After three years of hard work, with the help of Allah (SWT) the committee purchased a school building at 3972 Rowland Drive SE, Grand Rapids, MI, to become the first full time Islamic School in second largest city in the state of Michigan.

School’s mission:

Islamic School of West Michigan, INC is organized exclusively for charitable, religious, educational and scientific purposes.  Islamic School of West Michigan, INC admits students of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to its students and does not discriminate on the basis of race in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school administered programs.

 

Goals:

The goals of the school are as follows:

  • To provide school age individuals with an atmosphere as close to the Islamic ideal as possible, in which these individuals can grow and learn as whole individuals, intellectually, spiritually and physically.

  • To offer academic excellence so that school age individuals can be prepared to take an active and dominant role in the world in which they live.

  • To enable school age individuals to enhance their understanding of the Qur’an and Sunnah through instruction in the Arabic and in English languages.
